Learn How to Maintain Your Double Glazing Installation

Congratulations on your new home improvements! You’ve invested lots of your hard-earned money into your installation, so it’s important to look after it. By following the recommendations laid out in this short maintenance guide, you’ll be able to keep your installation looking fresh all year round and guarantee superb performance.

Looking After Your Glass

Before attempting to clean your double glazing, it’s important to remove any items from your person that might cause damage. For example, jewellery could scratch the glass, which means it might need replacing.

Almost any household cleaning product can be used to wash your double glazing. We would recommend using soap and water, which should be applied using a non-abrasive cloth, before using other products.

Follow the same processes outlined above if your double glazing is leaded, but take care not to apply undue pressure. Leaded glass can be dislodged from the surface during the cleaning process if you’re overzealous.

If, for any reason, you inadvertently scratch the glass, the problem can normally be remedied. It’s possible to buy a product called jewellers rouge – or, alternatively, a recognized rubbing compound will do the job.

double glazing condensation

To ventilate your home:

  • Simply open a window to let the moisture escape;
  • Contact us to discuss fitting wall vents to offset the issue;
  • Fit an extraction or ventilator unit in your kitchen;

Use heating effectively by:

  • Increasing temperature slightly in problem areas;
  • Fitting radiators directly

    Fitting radiators directly beneath window panes.

Alterative Options:

Other ways to prevent condensation include keeping interior kitchen and bathroom doors closed to prevent moisture escaping into your primary living spaces. Fitting ventilation grilles in bedrooms will also prevent the accumulation of damp.

Stay safe by:

  • Making sure your windows are closed before you go out or at night – and by removing the key from each lock;
  • Lifting the handles in each of your doors, turn each key to throw and lock hookbolts and deadbolts where relevant.

What does this mean:

Staying safe means equipping your home so it’s easy to escape from in the event of a fire. Keep keys close to windows, but make sure they’re not visible to anyone from the outside.

Adequate Lubrication

Maintaining your installation will involve more than just running some rudimentary checks and washing down surfaces with warm soapy water. Lubricating your doors and windows on a regular basis is also vital.

We recommend using machine oil as a hardware lubricant, which should be used every 6-12 months where practical – and depending on the location of the unit. In some cases, petroleum jelly may be better (refer to your manual).

Brasswork is automatically protected by a lacquered coating. Over a period of time, this will peel and lose its lustre. You can use nail polish remover to remove the existing coating, clean it with a brass polish then re-lacquer the area as required.

If the weatherseals used in your doors or windows start to discolour, this should not be a cause for alarm. This is a perfectly normal occurrence, so there is no need to take any preventative action or contact Kingfisher for help.

Conservatory, Porches and Roofs

The rafters, roofs and any components that form part of our conservatory, porch, or roof, must be cleaned the same way as uPVC frames.

To properly maintain these structures:

  • In all cases, avoid cleaning your structure with abrasive or solvent-based cleaning products;
  • To avoid injury, never walk on your conservatory roof – leave this to the professionals;
  • Ensure the panels in your roof are washed with soap and water on regular basis;
  • Make sure the guttering is cleared of debris, so that water does not overflow.

Where appropriate, examine the weatherseals. If they are loose, push them back into their grooves. If they are broken, contact us and we’ll be able to help you.
